yumetreeRoots & Dreams, The YuMe Tree and Garden  is a public art project in Southeast Washington, DC, developed by the non-profit Corner Store.  It involves more than a thousand children, hundreds of Capitol Hill neighbors, and several elementary schools. The centerpiece is a 28 foot long and 14 foot high glass and tile mosaic YuMe Tree set on the long north-facing wall of the 12th & E Street CVS/pharmacy in Southeast DC.   Melwood Horticultural Training center will design and plant a 60-foot potted garden along the wall beneath the tree.

Originally conceived in 2001, the initiative was driven forward to its completion in the Fall of 2003 through generous financial sponsorship and voluntary contributions of time and talent.  The YuMe tree was formally unveiled on 4 October.  See how you can still help.

Roots & Dreams reflects the mission of the Corner Store.  The roots reflect family and community ties to the project, while the dreams are the aspirations and goals of that community -- as symbolized by the words written on each of the "Dreams" tiles that will form the background of the YuMe Tree.  Neighborhood kids are active participants in transforming a bare wall into something extraordinary. Building a mosaic tree from over a thousand three-inch tiles demonstrates that small actions can create big changes.  We hope that experience stays with them, that they’re able to bring their own children to the wall and still find their names.
